Why low back pain happens
Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people miss work, and it is one of the most common reasons people visit us. For most people it is not caused by anything dangerous. It usually comes from irritated joints, strained muscles or ligaments, or a disc that is unhappy with the way the back has been loaded. Long hours sitting at a desk or behind the wheel, lifting with a rounded back, a sudden twist in the yard, or simply doing more than usual after a quiet few months can all set it off.
The pain can be sharp or dull. It might sit in one spot or spread across the lower back and into the buttocks. It often feels worse first thing in the morning or after sitting, and easier once you get moving. Pain that travels below the knee, with tingling or numbness in the leg, is often a sign of nerve irritation, which we cover on our sciatica page.
How we assess your back
Every back is different, so we do not use a one-size-fits-all routine. At your first visit we ask how the pain started, what makes it better or worse, how it affects your work and sleep, and whether you have any other health conditions. Then we examine how your spine and hips move, test strength and reflexes in your legs, and gently check the joints and muscles that might be involved.
We also screen for the uncommon causes of back pain that need a different kind of care. If anything in your history or exam suggests you should see a physician or a specialist first, we will tell you clearly and help you get there.
What treatment looks like
Treatment is built around your goals, whether that is sitting through a full shift, lifting your kids, or getting back on the golf course. A typical plan combines:
- Spinal adjustment and mobilization to restore comfortable movement to stiff joints. We use gentle, low-force techniques when they suit you better.
- Soft tissue work to ease tight, guarded muscles around the spine and hips.
- Targeted exercise that you can do at home in ten minutes a day, chosen to build strength and confidence in your back.
- Practical advice on sitting, lifting, sleep positions and pacing your activity while you recover.
Most people with recent back pain notice a real difference within the first few visits. Back pain that has been around for months or years usually takes longer, and the home exercises become even more important. We check your progress at every visit against the goals we agreed, and we adjust the plan if you are not improving as expected.
Keeping it from coming back
Back pain often returns, but you can lower the odds. Staying active, building strength in your hips and trunk, breaking up long periods of sitting, and lifting with good form all help. Before you finish care with us, we make sure you have a short routine you can keep doing on your own, and you know what to do if you feel an old twinge starting again.
